When the winter starts I get itch all over my body. My hubby said that it's a case of winter itch, a common and annoying cold-weather condition. How can one season have such a dramatic effect on your skin? Quite simply, the less humidity in the air, the drier your skin will be because it has less moisture to grab on to. Hiding inside won't help because the heat that keeps you toasty also sucks the water straight from your body. And if your over 40, your skin's protective barrier has an even harder time doing it's job.
But here's the good news: These easy lifestyles tweaks will help tremendously.
- When you shower, think short and warm. Long, hot showers might feel good but they're serious moisture-suckers.
- Use deodorant or anti-bacterial soap only where you really need it-like under your arms-and stick to gentle, moisturizing cleansers everywhere else.
- As soon as you step out of the shower, pat your skin lightly with towel and apply a lotion-one packed with hydrating ingredients such as dimethicone, shea butter, ceramides or petroleum jelly-while your skin is still damp, to trap that precious moisture.
- Put a humidifier in your bedroom to keep your skin nourished and happy. Cracking open a window while you sleep helps, too. Pamper your skin this weekend. Have fun! :)
